 rama/Documentary | Written by Stravos | 1h 54m | NR\n\nThe powerful relati
onship between art\, free speech\, and resistance takes\n\ncenter stage on
ce again. TCA is screening a special 20th Anniversary Producers Cut of the
award-winning 2007 documentary Committing Poetry in Times of War. This up
dated version brings new life to a film that is even more relevant to ourw
orld today than it was two decades ago.\n\nCommitting Poetry in Times of W
ar tells the gripping story of Bill Nevins. He was a\n\ndedicated high sch
ool teacher and poetry coach in New Mexico. In 2003\, Nevins was\n\nsuspen
ded from his job. His crime? Supporting his student poetry team after they
read\n\nan anti-war poem over the school’s PA system. The film tracks t
he massive wave of\n\nstudent protests\, community legal battles\, and art
istic resistance that followed his\n\nsuspension. It shines a bright light
on the dangers of censorship during times of\n\nnational fear.\n\nThe bra
 nd-new 20th Anniversary Producers Cut and in-theater post screening\n\ndis
cussion features freshly restored footage\, dialogue with the original par
ticipants\, and\n\nreflections on how the struggle for free speech has cha
nged over the last twenty years.\n\n“When we first made this film\, we w
anted to capture a specific moment of political\n\ntension and artistic br
avery\,” says the production team “But looking at the world\n\ntoday
—where book bans are rising\, teachers face heavy restrictions\, and stu
dents are\n\nstill fighting for their voices to be heard—we realized thi
s story isn’t just history. It is\n\nhappening right now. This new cut i
s a wake-up call and a celebration of the brave\n\nyoung voices who refuse
to be silenced and the power of creativity to make change.”\n\nThe orig
inal 2007 release won critical acclaim and multiple festival awards for it
s raw\,\n\nhonest look at American patriotism and the right to dissent. To
day\, as classrooms and\n\nschool boards become battlegrounds for free exp
ression once again\, the film serves as\n\na vital tool for educators\, ac
 tivists\, and artists everywhere.
